Various accidents occured in the Barberton area last week Thursday. The rainy day that was experienced throughout the Lowveld made the roads wet and slippery and could have been a contributing factor.
A young man died on the Kaapmuiden road just beyond the first railway crossing. Jaco van Lill (27), a sales representative of Würth SA, lost control of his Opel Astra and collided with a Nissan truck of Easigas, Rocky Drift. He
was supposed to be married in September.
The accident happened at about 12:00 and after waiting for the forensic team from Nelspruit to arrive, the body could only be removed from the wreck after 16:00. It was taken to Doves.
The driver of the truck, JK Ngobeni and his passenger JR Nyathi suffered minor injuries and were taken to the Barberton provincial hospital.
Two accidents occurred on the Badplaas road, one at 10:00 and the other at 10:30. One involved a Nissan truck and the other a Toyota Corolla. In both incidents the drivers and passengers suffered minor injuries.
One woman who was very lucky and thankful to be alive was Tanya Kinnear. She was on her way to Nelspruit when she lost control of her Toyota Hilux double cab on Hilltop. According to Tanya she often drove to Nelspruit and was extra careful on this particular morning because the road was wet and slippery. Going around a very sharp turn near the bottom of Hilltop, her vehicle slipped on the road and turned its nose towards the mountain, going over into the right-hand lane.
“My husband often told me that if this should happen I should just hang onto the steering wheel and not try to bring the vehicle under control. Everything happened so fast I did not think straight and tried to bring the vehicle back to the left lane,” she said. The next moment she went of the edge nose first. Her vehicle rolled several time before coming to a stop on its side approximately 40m further.
The fact that she was wearing her safety belt most probably saved her life. “I managed to kick the passenger door open, grabbed my CD’s, handbag and diary and stumbled back to the top of the road,” a very relieved Tanya told the Barberton Times the next day. “I am a walking miracle and am very relieved that I am alive to tell the tale,” she said.
Traffic was interrupted at Hilltop until after 13:00 as the recovery team battled to retrieve her vehicle.
