Projects at standstill
By Richard Nkosi

MES for local government and housing, Jabu Mahlangu, visited Emjindini in March and set July 31 as deadline for the completion
of all housing projects.
Mahlangu said this on inspecting the housing crisis that was reported to be at a standstill. He further warned that should contractors
fail to oblige to the agreement, his department would forfeit them the tenders and also claim damages from them. Recently, the housing
department convened a meeting with contractors where they signed a confirmation of receipt and acceptance of the conditions of the extension.
However, the hope that the projects would be completed by July seemed impossible due to the non-payments of contractors by the
department, resulting in another standstill.
Reports state that laboures had laid their tools down after working an additional 10 days without compensation.
In the meantime contractors were in negotiation with the department which refused to transfer the outstanding capital to the
builders in order to pay laboures. They received summons from dealers for materials bought on credit, demanding payment.
According to Lucas Morena of Umjindi housing desk, the delay was due to failed contract renew with the department and municipality.
He said no payment would be processed for contractors who failed to renew.
Contrary to Morena statement one contractor told Barberton Times he renewed his on April 5 but payment had not been processed.
During his visit Mahlanga assured that payments would be on time. This was after they informed him they would not bear the full
brunt of the blame as his department had caused other delays.
Simphiwe Kunene, spokesman for housing, said they were working around the clock to address the non-payment issue. “These were
caused by minor technical problems, but we have speed up the process.”

The pupils of Barberton Nursery School visited the SPCA last week and each of them brought food to donate to the organisation.
According to their teacher, Henriëtte van Tonder, the visit went hand in hand with their theme for the week
“Pets an how to look after them.”
They spent some time with Jana du Plessis who showed them around and told them how to look after
their animals.
Jackie Eichadt was most impressed with the cats and is seen here hugging one.
