 Ambush at hot spot
By Dalene Robus

Five attempted hi-jacking incidents occurred on the Kaapmuiden road in two days, resulting in one death and one injury.
The drama started on Thursday evening, October 13 when four vehicles came under fire in less then 90 minutes.
The shootings occurred between Verulam and the first railway crossing near New Consort Mine.
On Friday evening Lucas Nkosi(34) from Mandela Village was fatally wounded and his car hi-jacked near the Caledonian-turn-off.

The first shooting on Thursday took place at 20:40 when the driver of a truck, transporting cane to TSB in Malelane, was shot when he stopped at the railway crossing. According to the police report two men forced the passenger door open and a shot went off, hitting the driver in his left shoulder.

The driver, Elmon Mchumu (50), kept his cool and immediately accelerated, which resulted in the suspects jumping off the truck. The wounded driver continued driving towards Malelane, and notified TSB depot about the incident. They immediately contacted the Barberton SAPS who came to his assistance approximately five kilometres from the attempted hi-jacking spot. He was treated at Barberton Medi-clinic.

An hour later Const Mxolise Nyundu, an off-duty police officer, became the second victim. While travelling in the direction of Kaapmuiden two shots were fired at him from the left-side of the road between Verulam and the first railway crossing. He immediately accelerated and returned to Barberton via the Fairview mine road, where he called for backup from the police station.

The next two incidents occurred within 30 minutes of the second, when two Toyota double-cab bakkies approaching Barberton came under fire within minutes of each other. The shots narrowly missed both vehicles. At this stage more police reinforcements were already on their way to the crime scene.

The following night, unaware of any danger, Nkosi gave the suspects a lift, which resulted in his being shot in the head.
According to Supt Phafane Seimela, head of detective services, the police discovered his body on Saturday morning. His Mazda 323 and the firearm were recovered in Elukwatini on Sunday morning.
The police arrested one suspect and are still investigating the incidents. Motorists are advised to be cautious while driving on the Kaapmuiden Road.

Brothers’ argument ends in tragic deaths
By Richard Nkosi

The community of Emjindini is still in shock following the fatal shooting of two brothers.
Moses Gumede (41) shot his brother Elvis (28) twice before turning the gun on himself last Wednesday at Emjindini extension 10, phase 2. Both died instantly. The incident is believed to be one of the most shocking and the first of its kind to occur in Emjindini.

A still traumatized Monica Dhlamini, who witnessed the whole drama, said that Moses came to her boyfriend’s (Elvis) home. They had an argument about money he had borrowed from Moses.
Elvis allegedly told Moses that he would repay the R4 000 he owed him and would assist Moses financially, as he had not been working at that time. This allegedly angered Moses who then shot Elvis twice.
Moses then pointed the gun on Monica, who was crying. During the ensuing argument, he allegedly shot himself.

* In another family related incident, Boy Mavuso (61) was found dead after an argument with one of his children. The incident took place at New Village in Emjindini. According to a police report, Boy was under the influence of alcohol. After a lengthy discussion a shot was fired and moments later, his wife found him lying on the floor. According to Supt David Seimela of the local police station, the cause of death will be determined once the post mortem has been completed.
